Renowned Architect Designing New Nasher Museum of Art
Rafael Viñoly, an internationally-known architect with offices in New York, Tokyo and Buenos Aires is designing the new Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University in Durham. The new 65,767-square-foot facility will be located on Anderson Street, near Duke Gardens and promises to be an architectural landmark.
Uruguayan-born Viñoly was raised in Argentina and has lived in the United States since 1979. The classically-trained cellist and pianist, who once considered a concert career believes, "buildings are forms of performance."
He recently received worldwide acclaim for the Tokyo International Forum, a performing arts complex and convention center completed in 1996. Other projects include the new Philadelphia Regional Performing Arts Center. The site and design were completed in 2001-2002. Construction began in January 2003, and will be completed in Fall 2004. The museum will open in October 2005.
